Ryan was a pupil at Ysgol Bro Myrddin and with the Carmarthen Athletic club as a youngster before making a debut with the Wales under-18s as a replacement against France at Swansea in 2013. He was then capped for Wales under-20’s on eight occasions in 2014 and 2015 and made his mark in Premiership rugby by playing 41 times with Carmarthen Quins. At first with the Scarlets Academy, he made his debut for the Scarlets senior side in 2013. He played for Wales as a replacement against RGC 1404 in a trial at Colwyn Bay and a week later he made his international debut against Tonga in Auckland in June 2017, when he came on as a replacement hooker for Kristian Dacey in a 24-6 win. A week later he started the match with Samoa at Apia and Wales won by 19-17. On the summer tour of 2018 he scored the winning try against South Africa in Washington (USA) and in 2019 he made a World Cup debut against Uruguay. He started in all four Autumn internationals of 2021, scoring two tries against Fiji and one against Australia, both at Cardiff. Before the 2023 RWC Ryan had started 20 times and been a replacement on 14 occasions, scoring four tries.
