Roy scored the try that helped Llanelli defeat New Zealand at Stradey Park in 1972 and in 2013 (41 years afterwards) he donated the jersey he wore that day, plus the jersey of his opposite number, Bruce Robertson, and the match-ball to the historic Llanelli House. He was educated at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Carmarthen and Cardiff College of Education, also playing for Carmarthen Athletic and once for Bridgend before joining Llanelli and making 227 appearances, scoring 71 tries (1970-1981) before a broken leg ended his career. He finished third in the Welsh Decathlon Championship in 1970, while in 1972 he made a debut for the Barbarians and was a Lions tourist to South Africa in 1974, but did not play in a test. For Wales he scored tries against Scotland (1972) and Ireland (1975), while he toured with Wales to Canada (1973) and Japan/Hong Kong (1975). He played for Wales ‘B’ and also England-Wales v Scotland-Ireland at Murrayfield (1972). His father was a Belgian, while Roy, who became a teacher at his old school (Queen Elizabeth Grammar) was chairman of Llanelli RFC in 1994-95.
