Ken has made 59 starts in his 91 games for Wales, being a fine hooker who scored tries against Argentina in 2013; South Africa in both 2014 and 2016, then a brace against Italy in 2021 and a sixth try against Scotland in 2023. He was educated at Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Bro Myrddin in Carmarthen and won caps for Wales at U-18 and U-19 levels in 2005 and 2006. From Carmarthen Athletic he studied at UWIC in Cardiff and gained Wales U-20 caps in 2007. He joined Llanelli (11 games, 3 tries) and then the Scarlets from 2006. He toured with Wales to Australia in 2012 and South Africa in 2014. Injury halted his career in 2014-15, but he returned and toured with Wales to New Zealand in 2016 and returned there with the 2017 Lions (inc 2 tests as replacement). In 2019 he played in the Grand Slam and the World Cup in Japan. His father Delme was a second row forward for Carmarthen Athletic and his younger sister Vicky played for the Wales Women’s Rugby team. In 2021 he toured with the Lions to South Africa after having played against Japan at Murrayfield prior to the tour and he played in the three tests. Injury caused him to miss the 2021 Autumn internationals and the 2022 Six-Nations matches. He was back into the Wales side against NZ in Autumn 2022 and captain in all the 6-Nations games of 2023, but pulled out of the Wales squad for the World Cup that year.
