At club level he played 427 times for Bayern Munich, before going to the USA in 1977 to appear in 28 matches and then going back to Germany with 80 games for Hamburg, only to return to the USA for 25 games with New York Cosmos, thus playing well over 600 senior matches in all. As a manager he was in charge of West Germany (1984-1990), Marseille and Bayern Munich. He then worked as a journalist until 2016. He was a winner in the World Cup, the European Cup (three times) and the European Cup-Winners Cup and was one of three men to win the World Cup as a player (1974) and a manager (1990).
