Though Ian Rush played 73 times for Wales, scoring 28 goals (1980-1996), he made his mark in football more outside the Principality. He became a legend in two spells with Liverpool, making in total 660 appearances and scoring 346 goals. He had started with Chester (1978-1980), then joined Liverpool until 1986, when he moved to Italy with Juventus, but returned after just 29 appearances. He was granted a free transfer from Liverpool to Leeds United in 1996, and then to Newcastle, Sheffield United (on loan) and Wrexham, but his final four clubs brought just three goals in 67 games. Then, after three games in Australia he retired and had just one season managing Chester. He won many honours that included two European Cups, three FA Cups, the Footballer of the Year, the Player’s Player of the Year and BBC Wales Sports Personality of the Year (1984). He also won the European Golden Boot (1984).
